How do I convert a Hebrew date to a civil one, or vice versa?

Answer

To convert a Hebrew date to a civil one, take the Hebrew date, for example 5722, omit the first digit, 722, and add the number 1240, to obtain an answer of 1962.

5722 --> 722

722 + 1240 = 1962 CE.

If the first digit is a 4, just add 240:

4907--> 907

907 +240 = 1147 CE.

Note that the Hebrew year 5000 corresponds to 1240 CE.

Important! The Hebrew/Jewish year begins in the month of Tishri, which occurs around September/October. So if you are dealing, for example with any date after 29 September 1962_x0017_Rosh ha-Shanah, the Jewish New Year 5723_x0017_you must add one year.

To convert the civil date to the Hebrew, reverse the operation, subtracting 1240 from the civil year, and then adding 5000 if the year is after 1240 CE, or 4000 if the year is prior to 1240:

1962 - 1240 = 722

722 + 5000 = 5722

Again, if the date follows the Jewish New Year (assume from September/October on) add one year to the final sum (5722 from January to August/September, 5723 after September/October).

There are a number of Hebrew-Civil/Civil-Hebrew converters online, such as the Hebrew Date Converter provided by hebcal.com.
