How can I watch a video in the library, including DVDs and VHS tapes?

Answer

To locate in the catalog:

The majority of films available through the Penn Libraries are listed in the catalog. The Penn Libraries film collection includes streaming video options, in addition to DVDs and some older VHS formatted films.

For physical items, write down the name and call number of your film, then bring it to the location where the film is stored. In many cases, this will be the Van Pelt Circulation Desk. A staff member will then retrieve the film for checkout. DVDs and VHS films that are housed in LIBRA may be requested through the catalog.

To watch:

In-library: There are viewing stations for both individual and group viewings of DVDs (both U.S. and international formats), streaming videos, and even VHS tapes. For locations, please see Library Spaces and utilize the Spaces For: Media Study filter. Commonly used viewing stations are located in the Otto E. Albrecht Music Library’s Bodek Seminar room, inside the Marian Anderson Study Center (book here (for academic use: https://libcal.library.upenn.edu/space/24031) and the group viewing rooms in the Ormandy Music and Media Center (for individual/small group use).

At home: For at-home viewing, Penn students, faculty, and staff with PennCards can reserve and check out external DVD and Blu-ray drives, headphones, projectors, and screens to watch videos or DVDs from the Vitale Digital Media Lab on the 1st Floor West of Van Pelt Library.
