In adherence with US copyright law, we can scan articles and book chapters (but not entire books) from our collections for members of the Penn community.
Current students, faculty, and staff can request a scan of book chapters and articles that are 50 pages or less.
First, sign into the catalog by clicking Log in located in the top right corner and using your PennKey.
From there, you have two different options for requesting a scan:
Through the catalog:
- While viewing the item’s catalog entry, click on the green Request an item button.
- Select Email me a chapter or section, then click on the green Continue to request scan button.
- On the next page, be sure that "Article or chapter" is selected.
- Fill in the Pages field for your desired chapter or section.
- If you need a text-enabled PDF, please write the following in the “Comments” field:
- "OCR (Optical Character Recognition) needed"
- Click the green Place request button to submit your request.
OR
Through your library account:
- Click the My Account link in the top right corner of the page.
- Next, click on Request an item, and choose “Article or chapter” underneath “What’s the item you are requesting?
- Then, fill in the information for the item you wish to request.
- If you need a text-enabled PDF, please write the following in the “Comments” field:
- "OCR (Optical Character Recognition) needed"
- Click the green Place request button to submit your request.
Processing time can vary widely depending on the nature and availability of the item.
