Question & Answer

Question: I'm having trouble accessing full-text PDFs in HathiTrust. Why is this and what can I do to access what I need?
Answer: HathiTrust has begun to provide additional services, such as ability to download and create a personal collection of pdfs, through an authentication mechanism called Shibboleth. Currently, the Penn Libraries membership in HathiTrust does not offer unlimited access to full-text PDFs, because the Libraries are not configured to use Shibboleth, and is why the University of Pennsylvania does not appear in the drop-down menu for institutional login.

For more information about how you can use the digital library, see the HathiTrust help page.

Penn Libraries is working toward Shibboleth implementation, so limitations based on authentication methods may be subject to change in the future. Updates will be posted as soon as any additional developments occur.

What full-text volumes can I access in HathiTrust? Currently, you can access and download full-text PDFs of volumes that are in the public domain.

What should I do if there's an item I need or want and I cannot access it through HathiTrust? Let us know! You can contact us through the ILL forms (request books or articles/chapters), or through e-mail at library@pobox.upenn.edu.

Complete information on using the HathiTrust Digital Library can be found on this page.
